The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is a centre of medical excellence where, several times a year, surgeons from all over the world congregate to sit examinations, but it is also one of Edinburgh’s top venues for conferences, weddings or corporate events. Over the years, the College has built up an impressive clientele and as a thank you to these loyal clients, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Commercial Enterprises, the company responsible for the running of the commercial activities decided to hold a grand thank you party.
Held on the 13th January, 2012, the great and the good made their way to the College in Nicolson Street where an evening of unashamed luxury awaited. Just the thing to lighten up a dreich Scottish winter’s night!
Walking through the magnificent gates through the gardens, the guests were met with a fantastic light show, supplied by Edinburgh based lighting company, Black Light, who also supplied the lighting for the rest of the evening’s venues.
The guest list was a mixture from the corporate, business, civic and medical world, and the evening kicked off with a champagne reception in the magnificent Playfair Building – named after its prestigious architect, William Playfair, who also designed such Edinburgh landmarks as the National Gallery of Scotland, the Royal Scottish Academy, and Donaldsons College among others.
During the reception, the guests were allowed access to the Hall’s truly fascinating medical museum if they so wished.
After the quaffing of the champagne, the party moved on to the Quincentenary Building, where a magnificent dinner awaited. Inside, the dining room was set with ten tables, each seating thirteen guests, and each table was hosted by a sponsor.
After dinner entertainment was in the form of a game with a medical theme and dancing. A great time was had by all, even if, by some accounts, the competitiveness during the game sometimes became a bit cut- throat!
The catering and bar were provided by Heritage Portfolio, Edinburgh. In a new venture, The Royal College of Surgeons has recently formed a partnership with The Festival Theatre, Edinburgh to promote their event space on selected dates. This allows the College to cater for a conference for up to 1900 delegates with break out rooms between the two venues. Accommodation is available at the College’s four-star Ten Hill Place Hotel, which is situated on campus. The museum is open to members of the public during selected times, and is well worth a visit.
